San Francisco’s mysterious fog is a familiar sight during the summer months. Flowing through the entrance to San Francisco Bay, it often obscures portions of the Golden Gate Bridge for hours at a time. Sometimes the entire bridge seems to disappear! Playing hide-and-seek with the fog may not be fun when you’re trying to get a good photograph of the bridge, but fog is an important part of San Francisco’s unique ecosystem. Created when moist ocean air drifts across the cold California current flowing down the coastline, it helps keep temperatures cool and feeds plants like redwood trees north of the bridge.
